Mixed Crate: A Lightweight Solution Combining Cardboard and Solid Wood
For over 20 years, JPemBall has designed and manufactured mixed crates (also known as wrap crates) made from triple-wall corrugated cardboard with solid wood reinforcements.
A Solution Built for Weight Reduction
These mixed crates are typically used in applications where minimizing weight matters most — air freight, handling by female operators, or transport in a private vehicle.
They can be used once or multiple times, though within a limited number of cycles. Each mixed crate is manufactured to the exact dimensions of the equipment being packed, ensuring maximum, tailored protection throughout the entire transport process.
What Is a Mixed Crate ?
The mixed crate is a hybrid shipping crate that combines triple-wall corrugated cardboard with solid wood reinforcements, also referred to as a wrap crate in some of its configurations. Its structure relies on two solid wood frames, positioned at each end of the crate, which form the rigid skeleton of the whole assembly. The rest of the perimeter is clad in triple-wall corrugated cardboard panels, a design choice that both lightens the crate and reduces its cost, while maintaining excellent rigidity and effective protection for the goods inside.
In practical terms, the body of the mixed crate is made from 15 mm-thick triple-wall corrugated cardboard, reinforced at each end by 20 mm-thick solid wood bars (planed pine or fir). For larger crates, additional solid wood reinforcements can be added underneath the crate, or even inside the lid, to adapt the packaging’s strength to the weight and volume being shipped.
Lighter than an all-wood crate, the mixed crate still offers a comparable level of protection, thanks to a custom design built to withstand shocks and the demands of transport. It’s systematically fitted with manual lifting bars, and can also be equipped for pallet truck or forklift handling depending on your needs. Its interior bracing, custom-built by our team, ensures optimal support for the transported equipment.
